Sam McKewon and Rich Kaipust break down the big plays of the game, quarter by quarter.
* * *
Corey Cooper: In his first start as a Husker safety, he breaks up a third-down pass from Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith with a vicious, clean hit.
Sam Foltz: A false-start penalty contributes to a quick three-and-out for NU, and the redshirt freshman Husker punter uncorks a beauty in his first career attempt: a flip-the-field, 56-yard boot.
Brett Smith: Faces down a good pass rush for the Huskers, shuffles to his left and hits Jalen Claiborne for a 6-yard touchdown. Wyoming grabs a quick 7-0 leads and looks seamless doing it.
Taylor Martinez: In the department of better lucky than good, the Huskers' record-setting quarterback watches a bad snap bound past him. He picks it up, scrambles to his right and flings a jump ball to Quincy Enunwa, who tips it accidentally into the hands of tight end Jake Long for a 26-yard gain.
Pat Smith: The transfer from Western Illinois apparently won a tight placekicking battle over Mauro Bondi. He trots onto the field to nail a 24-yard field goal inside the right upright. Nebraska closes Wyoming's lead to 7-3.
Brett Smith: Makes a terrible mistake that results in his first interception in 183 attempts. From midfield, again sliding to his left, he ignores a wide-open receiver down the east sideline to throw into double coverage, where Husker defensive back Stanley Jean-Baptiste catches the ball at the goal line and returns it 40 yards.
Jamal Turner: On third down, he runs a post corner to the end zone. Martinez puts a little too much air under it, but Turner is able to haul it in for a 17-yard touchdown. NU takes a 10-7 lead into the second quarter.
Long: Drops a third-down pass on the Wyoming side of the field, forcing a Husker punt.
Shaun Wick: Finishes off a five-play, 76-yard drive with an easy 5-yard push into the end zone. Wyoming's offensive line is consistently winning battles against the NU defensive line at this point.
Ameer Abdullah: He's quiet for most of the first half, but he busts a 62-yard run with good blocking up front. It's the longest run of Abdullah's career.
Imani Cross: First, he rumbles 17 yards, fumbling the ball in the process. Fortunately, NU recovers. Cross then finishes off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge. Nebraska retakes the lead 17-14.
Brett Smith: Hits receiver Robert Herron right over the middle for a 23-yard gain. On the next play, he scrambles for 10 yards and another first down. But the drive stalls afterward, in part because of a bad snap, and Wyoming punts.
Cross: He commits a false-start penalty on third-and-1 of NU's ensuing possession. Nebraska is not able to convert afterward. It's the second false-start penalty on third-and-1 in the first half. The Huskers are overthinking their offense, even if they lead 17-14 at halftime.
Abdullah: Rips off runs of 8 and 11 yards, quickly moving the Huskers into Wyoming territory.
Cross: Busting off the best run of his career, Cross rumbles for a 31-yard touchdown, shaking one Cowboy and spinning out of the leg tackle of another. Nebraska starts the third quarter with a statement and leads 24-14.
Randy Gregory: After spending much of the first half stymied, the ballyhooed defensive end gets around his guy and sacks Smith with a single arm. Except officials call a roughing-the-passer penalty because Gregory wrapped his arm around Smith's neck.
Stuart Williams: After Wyoming's drive stalls at the Husker 33, the Cowboys kicker badly misses a 50-yard field-goal try to the right.
Enunwa: Catches a 3-yard touchdown pass from Martinez, grabbing a fade pattern in the corner of the end zone while dragging his foot. Initially referees rule he was out of bounds. But a replay gives him the score.
Brett Smith: Answers in style, completing passes of 10, 11, 11, 12 and 22 yards, the last going to running back Brandon Miller for a touchdown. NU leads 31-21.
Enunwa: The receiver shows sure hands on tough catches of 17 and 7 yards, the latter for a touchdown that gives the Huskers a 37-21 lead.
Ciante Evans: Wyoming tries a little trickery as Trey Norman takes a lateral from Smith and attempts a pass, but it's intercepted by Evans at the Huskers' 10-yard line.
Blair Burns: The Cowboys get their first stop of the second half as Burns intercepts Martinez in Wyoming territory with 6:26 left in the game.
Brett Smith: The Wyoming quarterback keeps firing, and this time hits Claiborne for a 29-yard score that pulls the Cowboys within 37-27 with 6:02 to go. That's the 50th career TD pass for the junior.
Herron: One more TD for the Cowboys as Smith connects with Herron, who shakes Cooper and completes a 47-yard scoring play with 1:32 left.
