COUNCIL BLUFFS — Jared Thompson hit Brandon Colpitts for a 30-yard touchdown with 18.8 seconds remaining to give Abraham Lincoln a thrilling 34-27 season-opening win over Lewis Central Thursday at C.B. Stadium.
The Titans rallied from two touchdowns behind to tie the game on two Caleb Shudak field goals in the fourth quarter. An interception and 20-yard return by Jared Garner set up the game-winner.
Abraham Lincoln, which avenged a 38-0 loss to L.C. last year, could’ve run out the clock and played for overtime in the final minute. It instead played for the win and had to punt after two incompletions.
Dallas Muschall sacked Austin Simmons on the ensuing first down from the Titan 48. On second down, Simmons threw toward the middle of the field while rolling left. Garner picked it off.
Colpitts’ second touchdown came on the next play. He finished with eight catches for 145 yards.
A.L. led most of the night. It used the short field on its opening possession after Robert Peters blocked a punt. The Lynx needed to go only 34 yards, the final 3 on a Dylan Garner run.
They made it 13-0 when Colpitts hauled in a pass from Thompson and raced 44 yards to the end zone less than eight minutes in. At that point, L.C. had three series and no first downs.
The Titans responded with a 73-yard drive late in the first. Conner Hanafan made a nice catch over a defender for a 36-yard gain to the 1. Simmons followed with a 1-yard TD sneak.
L.C. took its only lead midway through the second after Toby Korner recovered an errant punt snap on the A.L. 32. Four plays later, Jake Rodgers scored on a 15-yard screen to make it 14-13.
The Lynx answered with an 80-yard drive. Payton Hiffernan ripped off a 21-yard run to the L.C. 26. Dylan Garner carried it the rest of the way on the next play.
A.L. extended its lead in the third when Thompson hit Payton Scheinost for a 40-yard touchdown.
The Titans later caught a break when a short punt hit an A.L. player and was recovered by Rodgers. Simmons hit Hanafan for 42 yards to set up a 10-yard TD pass to Mitchell Brinkman.
Shudak’s two field goals, the last with 1:31 left, tied the score.
Thompson completed 14 of 24 passes for 231 yards. Dylan Garner ran for 115 yards.
Simmons was 14 for 31 for 227 yards for Lewis Central, which managed only 19 rushing yards.
