Creighton coach Elmar Bolowich and UNO coach Jason Mims said after their teams' 1-1 exhibition draw Friday night that there's no rivalry between the programs.
“We probably need a couple more games to call it a rivalry,” Mims said.
The players might not know that, though, as evidenced by six yellow cards and a red card by the two sides.
Creighton's Zabarle Kollie scored in the first half, and Vance Rookwood's goal in the 74th minute tied it amid several skirmishes between the teams.
The Mavs had to survive the last 7:48 playing a man down after Craig Buettner was ejected for rough play.
The Mavs, entering their third season of men's soccer, were able to do what few visitors can do at CU's Morrison Stadium — generate offense.
After limiting Notre Dame to four shots last week, the No. 6 Bluejays allowed UNO to outshoot them 11-10 overall and get six shots on goal before a crowd of 3,133.
UNO carried the pace early. Creighton keeper Alex Bolowich was forced to make a save on Buettner in the eighth minute after a Creighton turnover on the back line.
Two minutes later, UNO's Logan Mendez just missed a goal as his corner kick cleared everybody in the box but didn't have quite enough curl, and he banged it off the far post.
“I thought UNO, I give them a lot of credit,” Elmar Bolowich said. “They really worked extremely hard, and they took their opportunities in the beginning and could have easily gone ahead in the game.”
The Bluejays finally started to click on offense with about 30 minutes remaining in the first half.
Mavs keeper Matt Grosey had to steer clear a header from Carlos McCrary off a crossing pass from Christian Blandon in the 17th minute.
Then Grosey had to come out of goal and smother a ball after Timo Pitter got loose with it in the penalty area in the 24th minute.
Creighton finally was able to make a scoring chance stick in the 38th minute when Kollie headed a ball past Grosey off a crossing pass from Pitter.
The Bluejays continued their momentum the rest of the first half, attacking the UNO back line at will and peppering Grosey with shots.
Felipe da Silva nearly tied the match for the Mavs in the 73rd minute when his free kick ricocheted off the crossbar.
Less than a minute later, Rookwood made no mistake when he blasted a left-footer from 20 yards out into the left side of the goal to level the sides at 1-1.
