A 19-year-old skinny dipper who slipped into Carter Lake to avoid arrest ended up in police custody after all.
A Carter Lake officer on patrol about 3 a.m. Tuesday spotted the Omaha woman and five friends drinking and swimming at Wavecrest Park on the Iowa side of Carter Lake. Two women were swimming without clothes, according to police reports.
As the officer asked the swimmers for identification, the 19-year-old woman hopped into the lake, the report said.
Authorities couldn’t locate her, so a three-hour search was launched for a possible drowning victim. The Carter Lake, Council Bluffs and Omaha Police Departments, as well as the Omaha police helicopter, were involved.
Unknown to the rescuers: The woman had safely made it to the Carter Lake Club area at the southeast end of the lake, gotten out of the water and caught a ride to 60th and Grover Streets in Omaha.
Her mother then got involved, driving the teen back to Carter Lake, where she was arrested on suspicion of being a minor in possession of alcohol and interfering with a police matter.
“What a waste of resources ... for a little fun under the midnight moon,’’ said Sgt. Dan Driver of the Carter Lake Police Department.
