Creighton student tuned in to live music

You may have seen him over the weekend backstage at Maha Music Festival. You might see him backstage at concerts for Creighton University students. You also could see him on the bench at Creighton men's basketball games.

And studying. You'll probably see him doing that, too.

Joel Henriksen
Age: 20
Education: Junior at Creighton University
Hometown: Norfolk, Neb.
Family: Sister, Hailey, and parents, Allen and Penny
Hobbies: Going to lots of live concerts, listening to music and playing guitar

Joel Henriksen, 20, is involved with many organizations, including the student union at Creighton, where he is the concerts coordinator. In other words, the finance and marketing major is in charge of booking, promoting and organizing two concerts per year that the student union puts on for all Creighton's students.

Henriksen, who grew up in Norfolk, Neb., has always been interested in live music. His first concert was a Neil Diamond show when he was in first grade, and he's been hooked ever since.

It's what got him playing the guitar and joining bands with his friends. It's what got him going to more concerts. And it's what got him volunteering with Maha Music Festival and the Creighton student union.

“I've generally involved myself in live music in any way I can,” he said. “I've done stage crew stuff for some different companies around and security.”

Over the summer before he returned to Creighton for his junior year, he picked up an internship helping with a concert series in Norfolk.

Henriksen also works as a manager for the Jays men's basketball team. It's a lot of work, but he enjoys being involved.

He especially likes his job working on concerts for the students, even though it can be difficult.

“I'm the kind of person that wants to make everybody happy, but you realize that's not possible,” he said. “You do your best to please everyone you can. You want to get them excited.”
