The UNO men’s soccer team opened exhibition play with a loss Saturday, falling 1-0 to Penn State at the South Omaha Classic before a school-record 2,581 at Collin Stadium.
UNO outshot Penn State 11-9 and matched the co-Big Ten champions in shots on goal with four apiece.
The Mavericks went on the attack early, with Logan Mendez striking in the fifth minute with a 30-yard shot at Penn State goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton, who made a diving save.
Penn State center back Martin Seiler then scored on the Nittany Lions’ first shot of the game, a corner kick from Grant Warming to give Penn State a 1-0 lead at the 12:57 mark.
The Mavs had three more shots on goal in the first half but couldn’t capitalize. They came close in the 55th minute when Craig Buettner ripped a shot from 20 yards out, but it hit the right post and bounced across the face of the goal.
