FARGO, N.D. — The team from Omaha Westside reached the end of the line Monday at the American Legion Great Plains Regional.
Minnesota state runner-up Burnsville finished undefeated in the regional by eliminating KB Building Services (Westside) 15-5 in the championship game.
Burnsville advances to the eight-team Legion World Series that begins Friday in North Carolina while KB finishes the season 44-13.
Burnsville pounded out 20 hits and took advantage of four errors. The Minnesota squad scored four runs in the third, six in the fourth and five in the fifth.
Jonathan Vidlak had a three-run double in the sixth inning to pace KB. The game was halted after seven innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
“We chased some bad pitches and our pitching didn't get it done,” KB coach Bob Greco said. “We just weren't able to put anything together.”
KB starter Mike Waldron ran into trouble in the top of the third when Burnsville scored four runs on five hits. That deficit grew larger in the fourth as the Minnesota squad plated six runs on six hits and three KB errors.
Five more runs on six hits in the fifth inning stretched the Burnsville lead to 15-0. KB scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh, but it wasn't nearly enough to deny Burnsville the regional crown.
“I think they surprised us the way they hit today,” Greco said. “They were hitting the ball to the opposite field, and that was something we hadn't really seen in earlier games.”
Aaron Rozek pitched six innings and scattered six hits to get the win as Burnsville ousted its second consecutive team from Nebraska. PI Midwest (Omaha Creighton Prep) was eliminated Sunday after losing to Burnsville 7-3.
Vidlak and Jake Meyers each had two hits for KB.
“We told our guys they didn't have anything to hang their heads about,” Greco said. “We finished as the runner-up in a pretty tough regional, so that was nothing to be ashamed of.”
