This weekend, think fairs, festivals, fundraisers and something a little bit corny. We suggest the following events for families in the Omaha area.
» Cass County Fair: Continues through Sunday? at the Cass County Fairgrounds along Nebraska Highway 1 between U.S. Highway 75 and Nebraska Highway 50. Expect carnival rides, 4-H and open class competitions, exhibits and more. Events today will include barbecue awards at 4 p.m. and the parade at 6 p.m. The 4-H livestock auction will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday.
» Iowa State Fair: Continues through Aug. 18 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, 3000 E. Grand Ave. in Des Moines. Expect carnival rides, 4-H exhibits and competitions, live music, a parade, food, livestock and art.
» Kool-Aid Days: Continues through Sunday in Hastings, Neb., where the powdered soft drink was born. Activities today include the 9 a.m. parade downtown, the world's largest Kool-Aid stand from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. downtown and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Brickyard Park.
» SOS: 7:30 to 10:30 tonight at Fremont (Neb.) Splash Station. This SOS (Splash of Support) fundraiser is for the families whose 16-year-old sons were killed or injured in a June 3 traffic accident. Admission is $5, as are bracelets and T-shirts. Expect face painting, swimming, silent auction and raffle, plus sales of hot dogs, hamburgers and baked goods.
Jackson Blick, Tyler Walling and Trey Hansen were killed in the accident. Jake Burnside was critically hurt and has been doing rehab at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln.
» Sweet Corn Festival: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at Lauritzen Gardens, First and Bancroft Streets. Enjoy activities, entertainment, sweet corn, hayrack rides, free samples of “Nebraska Sweet Corn” ice cream, buy freshly popped kettle corn and learn about corn through educational activities. Guests also can watch special cooking demonstrations and take a blind salsa taste test of local restaurant salsa.
The Sweet Corn Festival is free to members and is included with regular garden admission of $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children younger than 6.
» Tractors Tall and Small V: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Washington County Museum, 102 N. 14th St. in Fort Calhoun, Neb. Expect antique tractors, pedal tractor pull, Roundhouse Bluegrass Band, pancake feed, face painting, vintage motorcycles, vintage wedding dresses, Skinny Bones Mad Cow Ride and more.
Admission is free at this family-friendly event, but donations are appreciated.
