Omaha police arrested a man in the shooting death early Saturday of Craig Brown.
Dwayne K. Blackson, 44, was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of criminal homicide, use of a weapon, possession of a stolen gun and other violations.
Brown, 23, was shot in the head and chest near 45th Street and Larimore Avenue.
He was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center in extremely critical condition and died later.
In 1999 Blackson was convicted in U.S. District Court in Omaha of conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine, according to court records. He was sentenced to about 7½ years in prison.
A woman who lives near the site of the shooting said that she couldn’t sleep early Saturday and was washing dishes about 2:20 a.m. or later. She heard people talking loudly outside.
“And I heard boom-boom-boom-boom,” said the woman, who asked not to be identified.
She saw a man run away and another man lying motionless on the grass between the curb and sidewalk. A third man yelled and cried beside the victim, she said.
Police officers who were at another incident heard the shots and found the victim, Lt. Enrico Ramos said.
The police came with a dog and discovered a gun nearby, the woman said.
“Sad situation,” she said. “It just really scared the hell out of me.”
