A Lincoln man was killed and his wife suffered life-threatening injuries in a motorcycle crash near White River, S.D.
William L. Ziegelbein, 44, a former Nebraska football player, was driving a 2008 Triumph Rocket north on U.S. Highway 83 about 7 p.m. Thursday.
The motorcycle went off the road on a curve and into the ditch, the South Dakota Highway Patrol said. The bike hit a post before rolling.
Ziegelbein and a passenger, his wife, were thrown from the motorcycle.
The accident occurred about seven miles north of White River.
Bill Ziegelbein was pronounced dead at the scene. Colleen S. Ziegelbein, 43, was taken to a Rosebud, S.D., hospital and later transferred to a Lincoln hospital.
Neither rider was wearing a helmet, the patrol said.
Bill Ziegelbein was a 1987 graduate of Polk High School and an engineering student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He was a walk-on center for the Huskers who later earned a scholarship and shared starting duties as a senior in 1991.
