Intense rain seems to be a recurring theme in the headlines.
Rainfall totals of 5 to 7 inches fell Monday in parts of eastern and southern Kansas, flooding a number of roads, including the Kansas Turnpike.
Successive days of rain had already saturated the soil, contributing to flooding.
The National Weather Service reports that some areas of the country have seen more than 10 inches of rain in the past week.
Also impressive is the record rainfall Sunday in Philadelphia.
The city received 8.02 inches, most of it falling in four hours, said AccuWeather Inc. The rain flooded a number of low-lying areas.
The previous 24-hour record in Philadelphia was 6.63 inches on Sept. 16, 1999.
