The Cass County Sheriff’s office on Sunday identified the 13-year-old boy who died as a result of a car accident Friday as Nathan Houfek.
He was a passenger in a car stopped in a construction zone on Highway 75 near Plattsmouth. The car was struck by a semi-tractor trailer driven by Kevin Monahan, 60.
Nathan died at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Four people were airlifted to the Nebraska Medical Center: two adults, Nathan and another child whose name has not been released.
Kelley Houfek, 42, was released from the hospital Sunday. The condition of Phyllis Durand, 66, improved to fair, according to the hospital.
According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, Monahan said he failed to see that cars were stopped for road construction on the northbound side of the highway. The semi first struck a Buick Park Avenue driven by Durand. That vehicle went into the ditch on the east side of the highway.
The semi then hit Houfek’s Ford Fusion, which was forced into a Mazda van driven by Joleen Rose, 41, of Cass County. Her vehicle went into the ditch on the west side of the highway.
