Legend Comics & Coffee in Omaha is officially considered one of the best comic shops in the world.
Legend is one of seven finalists for the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award, which narrowed down the finalists from a group of 15 nominees.
The Eisner Awards, which will be awarded Friday night at San Diego Comic-Con International, are to comics what the Oscars are to movies. Several employees of Legend Comics & Coffee, at 5207 Leavenworth St., are headed to Comic-Con this week to find out if they win.
“I've been floating on the clouds,” co-owner Jason Dasenbrock said about finding out. “We're all going crazy. It's an incredible honor just to be in the finals.”
The Eisner Awards — named for comic book legend Will Eisner, creator of “The Spirit” — are awarded in 29 categories, including best new series and best writer/artist team.
The award ceremony takes place Friday in San Diego; attendees include comic creators and other comics industry professionals. Dasenbrock and other Legend staff will be on hand as well.
Comics fans are able to nominate their favorite store via Comic-Con's website. According to Comic-Con, “The Award is given out yearly to retailers who have done an outstanding job of supporting the comics medium both in the industry at large and in their local community.”
“It means so much after all this hard work,” Dasenbrock said. “It's a flattering thing to be considered this highly.”
