MANCHESTER — An Iowa man accused of suggesting killing methods to a teenager who is charged in his grandparents’ deaths has reached a plea deal.
Twenty-year-old Brandon Ahlers entered an Alford plea Tuesday to lesser charges in connection with the May 2012 shooting deaths of Richard and Janet Sweet of Manchester. Their grandson, 18-year-old Isaiah Sweet, faces first-degree murder charges.
An Alford plea means Ahlers doesn’t admit guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence to convict him.
Ahlers faces 18 years in prison if an Iowa district court judge approves the deal, which drops two counts of first-degree murder.
