Dedicated groups have been working several years to spruce up Miguel Keith Park, 30th and Y Streets in South Omaha, and erect a statue to the Medal of Honor recipient for which the green space is named.
The monument will be unveiled at 10 a.m. July 27 at the park.
Miguel Hernandez Keith, who grew up in north Omaha, died May 8, 1970, while serving with the Marines in Vietnam.
Keith was seriously wounded when his platoon came under heavy attack. Nevertheless, he advanced on the enemy with machine gun fire, killing three. The others dispersed. During this charge, he was severely wounded by a grenade. Despite wounds and blood loss, Keith charged 25 attackers, forcing their retreat. He was mortally wounded by enemy fire.
His Medal of Honor was given posthumously. Keith is buried in Omaha's Forest Lawn Cemetery.
