Husker assistant Perez takes job at Texas Tech

LINCOLN — Nebraska associate head coach Hayden Perez was named to the same position at Texas Tech last week.

Perez, who has spent the past eight seasons on coach Scott Jacobson’s staff at Nebraska, helped the Huskers to five NCAA appearances, including a Sweet 16 showing last season.

Perez assisted Nebraska to a final ITA ranking of No. 16 in both 2011-12 and 2012-13 as well as No. 6 during the spring 2013 campaign — the highest ranking in school history. Perez helped in Nebraska’s recruiting coordination while assisting with every aspect of the program, including day-to-day operations, coaching, scheduling, travel arrangements and the team’s budget.

Perez earned ITA Central Region assistant coach of the year honors in 2007, 2010 and 2012. During his eight years as an assistant, the Huskers went 152-58, including a Big Ten regular-season title in 2012-13.

Perez developed three All-Americans and 2013 NCAA singles finalist Mary Weatherholt, who received the Big Ten women’s tennis athlete of the year award in 2012 and 2013.

“Coach Perez has served Nebraska tremendously well over the course of the last eight years,” Jacobson said. “His commitment to our program and the welfare of the young lives within our program is what I am most grateful for. I am happy for him, his wife Gretchen, and their two beautiful children, Tanner and Tristen, and wish them all the best in this new chapter of their lives.”
