The 52s Patriots (Millard South) will hold a special presentation before their game Tuesday night in honor of alum Tim Jones.
The 34-year-old Jones, a 1997 grad who competed in basketball and football, is fighting cancer for the third time since 1998. His older brothers Brian and Jeff also were athletes at Millard South.
Friends and family recently held a benefit to help cover the medical expenses involved with his most recent diagnosis. It also will help pay for travel expenses for his upcoming surgery July 25 and follow-up appointments at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
Jones will throw out the first pitch for the 8 p.m. Senior Legion game between the host Patriots and Associated Fire Protection (Papillion-La Vista South). Tim also will be presented with a check from the “Split the Pot” proceeds that the team has collected this summer.
Minnesota Twins pitcher and Millard South alum Brian Duensing also is expected to attend the game to be played during the major league All-Star break.
Pius using spring as motivation
Union Bank (Lincoln Pius X) is using the spring varsity season as motivation this summer, and it's working.
Pius, which finished as the Class B runner-up to Norris in the spring, recently captured the 23-team Mike Peterson tournament in Lincoln. Coach Troy Charf's squad went 5-1 in the competitive tournament to boost its record to 26-7.
Alex Schleppenbach pitched Union Bank to victory in the final, a 10-4 win against U-Stop (Lincoln East).
“I think we have more motivation this summer than if we'd won the title in the spring,” Schleppenbach said. “After that (3-2 spring championship) loss to Norris, we definitely want to win this summer.”
Showcase at Werner for area players
A showcase sponsored by The Strike Zone for high school juniors, seniors and college players will be held Monday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Werner Park.
More than 100 college coaches and scouts have been invited to attend and results of the showcase will be sent to college coaches, as well as the Major League Scouting Bureau. Players will be put through a light workout and pitchers will not throw more than 25 pitches.
Coaches from Nebraska, Creighton, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Bellevue University have been among those who have attended the showcase in the past.
Pre-registration is $40 and registration after Saturday is $50. For more information, contact Joe Siwa at firstname.lastname@example.org.
