Mayor Jean Stothert met with Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer on Monday to discuss how to reduce violent crimes in Omaha.
The meeting happened after two people died and seven more were injured as a result of shootings over the weekend.
Stothert said in a statement: “Chief Schmaderer and I are committed to reducing violent crime in the short term, as well as developing a long-term strategy focused on the root causes of crime.”
Stothert said she will carry out her campaign promise to tackle street crime by hiring more police officers, buying new radios and updating police cruisers and equipment.
Her budget, which will be presented to the City Council on July 23, will prioritize public safety, she said.
