Three hit musicals adapted from movies and a Pulitzer-winning drama lifted the Omaha Community Playhouse to top nominations for the 2012-13 Theatre Arts Guild awards, announced Monday.
“The Wizard of Oz” was the most nominated show at 19, including best musical, director, music director, choreographer, 11 cast members and four designers.
The Playhouse's other film-adaptation hits were “Legally Blonde,” with 12 nods (musical, director, music director, choreographer, ensemble, six cast members and a designer), and “Evil Dead: the Musical,” with nine (musical, director, music director, choreographer, three cast members and two designers).
Other best-musical honorees were SNAP's “next to normal,” about mental illness, with 12 nods (musical, director, music director, ensemble, five cast members and two designers) and “Avenue Q,” SNAP's blend of puppetry and live actors, with nine (musical, director and seven cast members).
The Playhouse's fall drama, “August: Osage County,” earned 13 nominations (best drama, director, nine cast members and two designers).
Other dramas that fared well were the Blue Barn Theatre's “Red,” about painter Mark Rothko, snagging eight nominations (best drama, director, both actors, four designers) and the Circle Theatre's “Gertrude Stein and a Companion,” with five (drama, director, both actresses and a designer). The Circle's “Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf” was also a best-drama choice, with two nods, along with the Playhouse's “Recommended Reading for Girls,” with six.
Leading comedies, with 10 nods each, were SNAP's race-relations riff “Clybourne Park” (best comedy, director, six cast members and two designers) and the Blue Barn's “The 39 Steps,” yet another movie adaptation (best comedy, director, ensemble, four cast members and three designers).
Other best-comedy nominees were the Bellevue Little Theatre's nostalgic “Leaving Iowa,” with three nods; Shelterbelt's new script “Psycho Ex Girlfriend,” with two, and the Playhouse's apocalyptic “boom,” with one.
With 69 nominations, the Playhouse snagged nearly half the field of 150. SNAP earned 31 nominations, the Blue Barn 18, the Shelterbelt 12 and the Circle eight.
The awards cover shows that opened from late June 2012 to mid-June 2013. TAG members chose nominees in 30 categories, and ballots were weighted by how many shows and theaters each voter attended. After a second round of balloting, winners will be announced Aug. 4.
