Bellevue police and an Omaha police helicopter found a man hiding in the woods Friday, threatening to kill himself after he was accused of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl.
Police search crews began looking for the man after receiving a 911 call at 9:30 a.m. The caller said a Des Monies man, Diego Armando Campos-Cortez, 26, had sexually assaulted a girl known to him at a Bellevue residence, said Bellevue Police Chief Mark Elbert. Campos-Cortez then fled the home with a kitchen knife, saying he planned to kill himself, police said.
The man was found hiding in a drainage tube near creeks north of Highway 370 near 25th street and Lewis and Clark Road around 3 p.m. The area was too vast for officers to walk and search, said Bellevue Police Capt. Chuck Clark.
About nine officers, search dogs and the Omaha Police Department's helicopter searched for Campos-Cortez, Elbert said. Officers first determined his general area from tracking his cell phone location, Elbert said.
Police tried to persuade Campos-Cortez to come out. He later did and had cut himself on one wrist, Clark said. He was taken to Bellevue Medical Center.
Elbert said Campos-Cortez will be booked on a charge if sexual assault. The girl he is suspected of assaulting is thought to be from West Des Moines, Elbert said.
