Omaha chef one of 60 semifinalists in Pillsbury Bake-Off
By Sarah Baker Hansen / World-Herald staff writer

Omaha cook Deborah Biggs is a semifinalist in the Pillsbury Bake-Off cooking contest. Biggs has cooked on the Food Network's “Ultimate Recipe Showdown” and has won more than $30,000 in cash, prizes and trips through cooking contests. Biggs is one of 60 cooks in the semifinalist round; about half of them will go to the finals.

This year, cooks were asked to keep their recipes simple and were limited to recipes that used seven or fewer ingredients and could be prepared in a half hour, not including baking or cooking time.

Her recipe, spicy churro crescent bites, is her take on a dippable dessert. Crescent dough is filled with orange marmalade and cayenne pepper and the crescents get dipped in a chocolate hazelnut dipping sauce.

Biggs is hoping to get the chance to cook in the national Pillsbury contest this November in Las Vegas, but she needs votes to get there. For the first time, the public will choose the finalists to compete for the prize through online votes. Voters can sign up at Bakeoff.com until June 27 to vote for Biggs' recipe.

The winner of the Pillsbury Bake-Off takes home a $1 million prize. The contest began in 1949.
