The Sweatshop, an art gallery in Benson, is temporarily converting to a vintage clothing shop.
Andrew Tatreau, who owns online retailer And Vintage Clothing, is operating a temporary or pop-up shop out of the space at 2727 N. 62nd St. And Vintage Clothing, which sells mainly clothing from the 1990s, will be open Wednesdays through Sundays from noon to 8 p.m.
Tatreau started his online business about a year and a half ago, and he had entertained the idea of opening a pop-up shop almost from the beginning. Since summer has traditionally been a bit slow for the online store, he decided June was as good a time as any to open a temporary brick-and-mortar space.
And he liked the idea of adding a bit of fun to his business. Last week, he invited artist friends to submit T-shirt designs, which he screen-printed on used T-shirts and is selling for $30 each until they're gone. Part of the proceeds from shirt sales will benefit the Sweatshop. On Sunday, he'll screen '90s cult classics “The Doom Generation” and “Welcome to the Dollhouse” on the side of the Petshop gallery next door beginning at 7:30 p.m.
“It's not just about the clothing,” he said.
Business, especially for young entrepreneurs catering to young consumers, he said, is about offering experiences and forming a community.
The And Vintage Clothing community will exist in its current form through June 28.
