COUNCIL BLUFFS — Late last week, Carly Williamson claimed Thomas Jefferson had better softball in it.
As if on cue, the Yellow Jackets are proving the senior right.
Thomas Jefferson on Thursday picked up its second consecutive Missouri River Conference win this week, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Sioux City North 3-2 at City Park.
The Jackets also beat Sioux City West on Tuesday. This is what Williamson said she meant.
“We're definitely seeing it,” she said. “If we can play like this, we're capable of absolutely anything.”
Although not overpowering, Williamson was effective in the circle while picking up the win. She allowed one hit while blanking the Stars (6-9) through the first five innings.
T.J. (5-7) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Alicia Beckman singled in Faye Arthur. Williamson doubled home Emily Dickerson in the fifth to extend the lead to 2-0.
A sensational running catch by North's Tegan Rodriguez in right field to end that inning kept it a two-run game. Rodriguez was injured on the play. But her replacement, Hayley Gibson, started a two-run rally for the Stars with a leadoff single in the sixth.
Tori Davenport plated Gibson with a base hit to center. Two T.J. errors helped North tie the score.
After giving up its lead, T.J. got it back in its final inning at the plate. Vanessa Banderas reached on a dropped fly ball and moved around on a groundout and two more errors by the Stars. She raced home from third with the deciding run on a low throw to first on a one-out ground ball.
Williamson credited Dickerson, her catcher, for calling a great game. She said they quickly found North's weaknesses, then exploited them.
Jackets coach Shannon Stusse said she's come to expect that from her only seniors.
“Carly and Emily are a good battery for us,” she said. “They understand where batters are and understand where to adjust and how to throw them. They've done a really good job for us.”
