Check out Mayor-elect Jean Stothert's new ride.
The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi has a hybrid gas-powered engine but can run solely on electricity for a couple of dozen miles. It has a roaring four-cylinder engine. It's maroon.
The mayor-elect recently leased the Fusion Energi as her official vehicle, a spokesman said Wednesday.
Stothert, however, will pay for the two-year lease herself and then will decide whether to buy the car or extend the lease agreement. She will also pay for her own gas, spokesman Daniel Keylin said.
During her campaign, Stothert promised to spurn a “chauffeured car for the mayor with a taxpayer-paid driver,” but Keylin said she would discuss that idea soon with Police Chief Todd Schmaderer. She planned to begin driving the car the day after her inauguration. The ceremony is Monday.
What fills the mayor's parking spot hasn't been free from politics.
Mayor Jim Suttle was derided for leasing an SUV with a 24 percent interest rate at the beginning of his term. That agreement was soon altered, but the issue haunted Suttle during a failed recall campaign and his unsuccessful re-election effort.
Suttle named his car “the dead horse” after the controversy. Whether Stothert will nickname her car remains to be seen.
The suggested retail price for the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi ranges from roughly $38,000 to $40,000. Ford says it can get as much as 108 miles per gallon in city driving.
