Abby Bergsten of Council Bluffs Lewis Central made some history Friday.
The sophomore turned in the highest state finish in the school’s girls tennis history, winning a pair of matches to place fifth in the Class 2-A singles competition at Veterans’ Memorial Tennis Center in Cedar Rapids.
“It means a lot,” Bergsten said. “It’s something I’ve worked towards for a long time.”
Bergsten opened with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Clinton’s Griffin Rasche. That sent her into the fifth-place match against Katie Melbourne of Pleasant Valley. Bergsten fought past Melbourne 6-4, 7-6 (5).
“It was a really tough match,” said Lewis Central assistant Ben Bergsten, Abby’s father. “She played well, and really had to fight for that one.”
The younger Bergsten roared back from a 3-0 second-set deficit by winning the next four games.
“I just stepped it up a little bit,” she said.
The Titan standout said she didn’t want to go to a third set and was able to finish off Melbourne in the tiebreaker. That completed a 23-1 singles season for Bergsten.
In the 1-A tournament at the Ankeny Tennis Complex, the unseeded Red Oak doubles team of Zoey Baker and Grace Blomstedt pushed top-seeded Lindsay McGonegle and Lindsay McManus before losing 7-6 (0), 6-4. The Tiger team finished fourth after losing to sisters Caroline and Elizabeth Ott of Dubuque Wahlert 6-1, 7-6 (7).
Red Oak’s Kate Walker placed fifth after straight-set wins over Waverly-Shell Rock’s Liz Rucker and Fort Dodge St. Edmond’s Mary Eide.
Also in 1-A, Glenwood’s two entries — doubles team Grace Newman and Rachel Tucker, along with singles player Ons Souissi — finished seventh.
Seniors Newman and Tucker rolled past Veronica Francis and Paige Engbers of Pella Christian in their final match, 6-2, 6-1.
In singles, Souissi, a foreign-exchange student from Tunisia, took seventh with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Waverly-Shell Rock’s Rucker.
