The dean of the University of Nebraska Medical Center's College of Public Health has announced that he will be leaving UNMC to become dean of the School of Public Health at the City University of New York.
Dr. Ayman El-Mohandes said his last day in Omaha will be Aug. 31.
El-Mohandes has been dean of the College of Public Health since 2009.
Chancellor Harold Maurer said in a statement that El-Mohandes "has been a transformational leader. He has brought national and international recognition to UNMC, recruited superb faculty, expanded student numbers and research grant support, and has built wonderful relationships in the community."
Before coming to UNMC, El-Mohandes, a pediatrician, had served as a member of the medical faculty at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., since 1985.
He left there as chairman of the department of prevention and community health in GWU's School of Public Health and Health Services.
El-Mohandes, 61, said his decision was bittersweet and difficult, but a good one for his family, from whom he has lived apart for most of the past four years. His wife, Hala, works in Washington, D.C., in export finance and will transfer to New York City.
A statement from UNMC said the chancellor's office said no decisions have been made on an interim dean or a national search.
