In a bid to keep State Sen. Ernie Chambers from filibustering everything in sight, 29 state senators joined the Omaha lawmaker in voting to rescind the City of Omaha’s option to seek voter approval to increase sales taxes by a half-cent. But only Omaha. (The city has not done so, and the mayor-elect has said she wouldn’t.) Lawmakers twice rejected rescinding the authority of all Nebraska cities to seek the extra tax. It’s an odd state tax policy that would treat one city differently from all the rest.
