Goodfellows is one of the more than 300 local charities raising funds and competing for prizes during today's first-ever Omaha Gives! drive.
The World-Herald's charity, which dates to 1889, is perhaps best known for its Christmastime fund drive, when people who have been helped by Goodfellows are featured in stories and photos in the paper.
But more than 80 percent of Goodfellows funds are spent throughout the year, to provide one-time emergency assistance.
Goodfellows is unique in its ability to act quickly to address a need; families facing eviction or the shutoff of utilities can have the help they need within days. In addition, every dollar donated goes to help those in need because The World-Herald covers all operating costs.
While collecting donations during the 24-hour online Omaha Gives! fundraiser, nonprofits also have a chance to share in $500,000 in matching funds plus $65,000 in prizes provided through the Omaha Community Foundation.
Visit OmahaGives24.org to contribute a minimum of $10. It all ends at midnight tonight.
