Omaha police said Thursday that the department's cold case unit is investigating whether there is a connection between the slayings of a Creighton University physician and his wife and the 2008 stabbing deaths of an 11-year-old boy and his family's housekeeper.
The bodies of Dr. Roger Brumback and Mary Brumback, both 65, were discovered Tuesday in their home at 11421 Shirley St. Police have not said how they were killed, but they are treating the deaths as homicides.
Roger Brumback was a friend and colleague of Drs. William and Claire Hunter of the Creighton University School of Medicine. Their son, Thomas Hunter, and housekeeper, Shirlee Sherman, 57, were killed March 13, 2008, at the Hunters' Dundee home. The case remains unsolved.
A $54,000 Crime Stoppers reward has been established for anyone with information on the Dundee case.
Homicide detectives were called to the Brumback home shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday. Investigators completed their on-site investigation Thursday afternoon, leaving behind uprooted shrubbery that had lined the front of the house.
Police said they had received several tips on the slayings.
“We will leave no stone unturned to bring justice and closure not only to the families involved but to our citizens of Omaha as well,” Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said in a statement.
About 10 people from First Responders Homicide PrayerWalks prayed outside the Brumback home Thursday evening.
Tuesday, a piano mover called 911 to report that he saw a man on the floor inside the Brumback home and a gun clip on the threshold of the front door.
Roger Brumback and William Hunter were both members of Creighton's pathology staff; Claire Hunter is in the cardiology department. Mary Brumback once worked as an attorney.
Anyone with information on the killings is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 444-STOP (7867) or log on to omahacrimestoppers.net, or text OPD and your tip to CRIMES (274637) or through the mobile iPhone/Android app “Tip Submit.” Tipsters always remain anonymous.
