WICHITA, Kan. — Creighton couldn’t complete the series sweep at Wichita State, falling 4-1 Sunday to the Shockers.
The Bluejays (28-14, 11-7 Missouri Valley Conference) were looking for their first sweep at Eck Stadium since becoming a continuous member of the Valley in 1977, but settled for their first series win in Wichita since 2003.
Creighton took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as senior Brennan Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman Reagan Fowler, who doubled to open the inning. But the Shockers (31-24, 15-6) put together a two-out rally in the fourth with a double, single, triple and wild pitch to take a 3-1 lead.
Wichita State added a run in the fourth to make it 4-1. It could have been more with the bases loaded and one out, but freshman Will Bamesberger entered in relief of Bluejay starter Austin Groth and induced an inning-ending double play.
Creighton had a chance to even the score in the seventh. The Bluejays loaded the bases as freshman Ryan Fitzgerald laced a two-out double to right center, then juniors Brad McKewon and Federico Castagnini drew walks.
Wichita State then brought in Brandon Peterson to face the go-ahead run in Jake Peter. The closer got Peter to fly out to left.
Shocker starter Garrett Brummett (3-0) went six innings, allowing the single run on four hits with three strikeouts to earn the win. Groth (2-1) took the loss. The freshman from South Sioux City, Neb., was charged with all four Shocker runs on nine hits and two walks in 413 innings.
The Bluejays next return home for the final four games of the regular season. Creighton will host Nebraska on Tuesday, then welcomes Missouri State for its final Valley series beginning Thursday.
