Creighton guard Yates to transfer

Guard Andre Yates has decided to transfer from Creighton after playing one season for the Bluejays.

Creighton coach Greg McDermott said Yates decided about three weeks ago that he would transfer but wanted to wait until the end of the school year before his decision was made public. Creighton’s spring semester ended Friday.

The 6-foot Yates played an average of 5.2 minutes in 28 games last season for Creighton. The Dayton, Ohio, native averaged 1.1 points and 0.6 assists while seeing backup action at the point guard spot.

He was one of two scholarship freshmen to join the program last fall. The other, guard Isaiah Zierden, redshirted.

Yates might have struggled for more playing time next season as Creighton returns starters at the point in junior Austin Chatman and at the shooting guard spot in senior Jahenns Manigat.

The Bluejays also has signed a pair of junior college guards this spring in Devin Brooks and James Milliken. Both are expected to challenge for extensive playing time next season.
