Two scoring bursts helped Class B's top-ranked girls team advance at the state tournament.
Omaha Skutt scored three goals in just more than two minutes in the first half, then added three more after the break in a 6-0 win against Holdrege in the first round Friday at Creighton's Morrison Stadium.
“The first one's always tough,” SkyHawks coach John Carlson said, “so it's good to get that out of the way.”
Even better, Carlson said, is that his team eliminated the taste of a district final loss — Skutt's only setback of the season.
The scoring started in the 22nd minute when forward Liz Bartels weaved through traffic to find Carly Brown waiting on the back side for an easy putaway.
Bartels did it herself on the next two, just more than a minute apart, to push the Skutt lead to 3-0.
“First to the ball. Passes, passes, passes. Shots on goal. Defense. They did everything very well,” Holdrege coach Brad Larson said. “They're a very good team. And sometimes those goals seem to come in bunches.”
The second wave came six minutes into the second half when Caitlin Rerucha scored, followed 50 seconds later by a Natalie Johnson goal. Brown finished things off in the 58th minute on a nice move in the box.
“I thought it was a team effort,” Carlson said. “All 22 players played, and we had some players come off the bench that got goals.”
Bartels, a Marquette recruit, finished with two goals and two assists for the SkyHawks.
“She did that with a man mark,” Carlson said. “So she had to beat two players to get those goals and assists. Just shows what kind of player she is.”
