It was something in the back of all the Elkhorn South players’ minds during their Class B girls soccer state quarterfinal Friday morning.
And in case it wasn’t, junior goalkeeper Jordan Thiem made sure with a reminder.
“It’s funny because at halftime (Thiem) said, ‘Can I say something real quick?’ ” said Elkhorn South coach Lindsay Wood. “She said, ‘We were up 1-0 at halftime last year and lost. We can’t quit now.’ That was kind of their motivation.”
Elkhorn South built on Friday’s one-goal halftime lead against Lincoln Lutheran/Raymond Central by tacking on three second-half goals for a 4-0 victory at Morrison Stadium.
A year ago, Lincoln Pius X rallied in the second half for a 2-1 overtime win against the Storm in the first round. In 2011, Elkhorn South had reached the state semifinals.
“Last year, I think we kind of expected to win because we beat (Pius) earlier in the season,” junior Megan Kucks said. “Now we have momentum going forward.”
Kucks put the Storm in front with the only goal of the first half with 4:40 left in the half.
Kelsey Doerr then set the tone for the rest of the game when she scored on an assist from Megan Kammer two minutes into the second half. It was Doerr’s team-leading 14th goal this season.
Elkhorn South got goals from Jennifer Wies and Carsen Lundgren in the last 16 minutes for the final margin.
Lincoln Lutheran coach David Gosselin was impressed with the Storm’s play.
“I’d seen them play a couple of times before, and they played with a different level of energy,” said Gosselin, whose team was making its first trip to state since 2005. “We were just outgunned. The kind of pressure they put on us, we were just outgunned from the very beginning.”
Elkhorn South takes a 10-game winning streak into the 6 p.m. Saturday semifinal against Gretna. Elkhorn South won both regular-season meetings by 1-0 scores.
“We just need to keep playing our possession game and not relax over these next two games,” Wood said. “We can’t get too comfortable.”
