ROCHESTER, Mich. — The University of Nebraska at Omaha split a doubleheader at Oakland on Friday, winning 8-2 in 12 innings before falling 3-0 in the nightcap.
The Mavericks are now 21-21 (14-5 Summit League), while the Golden Grizzlies are 15-31 (10-11 Summit League). First-place UNO has a two-game lead over South Dakota State (11-6) in the Summit.
The Mavs tied the opening game with two runs in the seventh, then scored six runs in the 12th on seven hits and an error.
Connor Messinger led off the inning by reaching on an error, followed by a single from Alex Schultz and a bunt single from Caleb Palensky. Cole Gruber then singled up the middle to score two runs. Brett Bass immediately singled in Palensky, and Gruber scored on a squeeze bunt Alex Mortensen.
Then Ryan Keele capped a 3-for-6 game with a two-run homer, his fourth of the year.
Down 2-0 after six innings, Palensky tied it with a two-run double.
Junior reliever Anthony Falcone (3-0) earned the win, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing one hit.
In the second game, UNO lefty Steven Schoonover (3-3) threw a six-inning complete game, allowing three unearned runs on eight hits.
But Jason Hager (3-6) was better, with a four-hit shutout that included five strikeouts.
Oakland scored its runs in the bottom of the sixth, combining four hits and two errors.
Keele was 2 for 3 for UNO, part of a 5 for 9 day.
The series concludes with a 3:30 p.m. game Saturday.
