Quincy Bennett has a method to the madness when it comes to shootouts.
Well, sort of.
“I kind of watch how they’re standing and their body position,” the Kearney keeper said. “It works. Kind of. Sometimes.”
It was plenty useful on Wednesday when the senior keeper stopped all three Millard West attempts to give his No. 7 Bearcats a 4-3 win over the No. 4 Wildcats in the Class A boys soccer tournament first round at Creighton’s Morrison Stadium.
Bennett’s effort put a cap on Kearney’s rally from a two-goal deficit at halftime and pushed the Bearcats into Friday’s 8 p.m. semifinal against No. 1 Omaha South.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen that,” Kearney coach Scott Steinbrook said of Bennett blanking Millard West in the shootout.
It looked for a while as if it wasn’t going to be a happy ride home for Bennett.
After Kearney’s Damien Austen scored the first goal of the match in the 26th minute, Millard West replied with three of their own in less than five minutes late in the half.
“They found the right gaps and got some shots off,” Bennett said.
Kearney didn’t fold. Isaac Armstrong got to a rebound off of a free kick in the 53rd minute to bring the Bearcats within one and Ben Clark cleaned up a similar miss 20 minutes later to knot things at 3.
A pair of scoreless overtimes gave way to a shootout that was all Kearney from the start.
Austen, Zack Wayman and Armstrong all put their attempts away for the Bearcats, and Bennett responded by stopping each Wildcat shot.
It improved Kearney to 5-0 in shootouts this season.
“As we were walking out and getting ready, I could kind of hear the whispers about that,” Steinbrook said. “Guys knew we had been in this position before and we came out of them with wins. Our kids have incredible faith in Quincy.”
