Before he became known as the man married to Nebraska's first female governor, Bill Orr was a success in his own right, as an insurance executive. Still, he wholeheartedly embraced his role at Gov. Kay Orr's side and brought some needed levity — and food — to that era's questions about the job. It is rare that a title fits, but, in the case of Bill Orr, there may be no better description of him than First Gentleman.
It was a cruel twist of fate that cold, wet weather led to the cancellation of a rare outdoor graduation ceremony for University of Nebraska-Lincoln undergraduates. The university had moved the ceremony outside because of renovations to the Devaney Center to prepare it for future volleyball use and because the future home of UNL basketball, Pinnacle Bank Arena, is still being built. One bit of good news, though: We learned this past weekend that the new arena is ahead of schedule and that UNL's August grads might be the first to walk across its stage.
