IOWA CITY — Redshirt freshman Clayton Taylor went 4 for 4 and hit his first career homer as part of a 14-hit attack that gave UNO a 6-5 win Tuesday over Iowa.
UNO jumped out to a 6-0 lead through 3 1/2 innings, then held on to clinch the season series with the Hawkeyes 3-2.
Senior Ryan Keele, junior Caleb Palensky and sophomore Alex Mortensen all went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and freshman Cole Gruber was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Senior Cory Buckley also went 1-for-4 with an RBI, extending his team-leading hitting streak to 16 games.
UNO (19-20) scored in the top of the first on Buckley's sacrifice fly, then Taylor led off the second with his homer. The Mavs added another run in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Mortensen.
Run-scoring singles from Palensky and Gruber gave UNO a 5-0 lead in the third, and Keele's RBI single made it 6-0 in the top of the fourth.
Iowa (17-26) came back for four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth.
But Cole Volkers (1-2), who entered the game to relieve starter Marcus Ethen in the fifth, held the Hawkeyes scoreless and limited them to just three hits until the eighth.
Volkers gave up two hits with no walks while striking out four in 3 23 innings.
Bryan Niedbalski's RBI single got the Hawkeyes within 6-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, reliever Derek Landis struck out two pinch-hitters before Eric Toole doubled to put the tying run in scoring position. But Landis caught Nick Roscetti looking to complete his sixth save.
