It's a big day for Bright Eyes and the indie band's label, Saddle Creek Records.
Bright Eyes' 2005 album, “I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning,” has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
It's the first gold certification — which signifies an album has sold more than 500,000 copies — for both Bright Eyes and Saddle Creek.
“More importantly, it signifies something bigger. It reminds us that music can make a huge impact on people, on communities, on cities, and on the world at large,” said label president Robb Nansel in a press release.
“I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning” was a milestone for Bright Eyes, the rock band led by Conor Oberst. The album debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard main album chart and No. 2 on the independent albums chart.
“Lua” and “Take It Easy (Love Nothing)” also landed at No. 1 and No. 2 on Billboard's singles chart.
Music media siezed onto the album, and write-ups appeared in Rolling Stone and the New York Times as well as in reports by the Associated Press and Newsweek.
“I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning” continues to receive praise from critics. “Road to Joy” earned a spot in Pitchfork's rankings of the top 500 songs since the punk rock era. Two songs, “Lua” and “The First Day of My Life,” appeared weeks ago on a list of the best Bright Eyes songs from music blog Stereogum.
“Lua” took the top spot: “'Lua' is perhaps the quintessential Bright Eyes song. It finds Oberst desperately longing for connection, no matter how self-destructive — and he finds cold comfort in the vices of drugs, alcohol and a one-night stand ... (and) he eventually grows disenchanted with the emptiness of his lifestyle.”
The success of “I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning” also opened doors for Saddle Creek and helped the label recruit new artists to its roster.
“I'm happy to know that so many others around the world found something in this album that spoke to them in the same way that it spoke to us,” Saddle Creek's Nansel said. “For some reason, this album rose up and caught people's attention and continues to do so every week when more and more people discover Bright Eyes' 'I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning' for the first time.”
