Megg Kelly hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning to help Western Illinois rally for a 4-3 win against UNO on Sunday at Westside Field.
The loss ended the Mavericks’ (34-6, 12-2 Summit League) seven-game winning streak and was their first defeat in nine home games this season.
Trailing 3-2 headed to the top of the seventh, Western Illinois (14-21, 8-14) began its rally when Karissa Kouchis reached on an error and Sammy Marshall singled. Both runners advanced on a ground-out before Kelly delivered her big hit to the leftfield corner, scoring Kouchis and Marshall.
UNO brought the top of its lineup to the plate in the seventh, but the Mavericks went down in order to end the game.
UNO had taken a 3-1 lead in the fifth on Allie Mathewson’s 11th home run of the season, but Leathernecks pitcher Kelsey Michelini (8-11) stymied the Mavericks’ offense for much of the game, allowing six hits and striking out five.
Western Illinois scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. In the sixth, Teagan Walsh singled to score pinch runner Bria Jones.
Dana Elsasser (20-6) allowed two earned runs on nine hits. The junior from Paxton struck out two and issued no walks, but did hit three batters. The Leathernecks’ run in the fourth inning ended Elsasser’s consecutive shutout streak at 32-1/3 innings
UNO finishes its home schedule at 5 p.m. Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Drake.
