KEARNEY, Neb. — Two suspects wanted in connection with robberies in Minnesota and South Dakota were in custody Tuesday in Dawson County following a short pursuit.
About 3:40 p.m. Monday, a Nebraska State Patrol trooper saw a car matching the description of a vehicle wanted in connection with a series of armed robberies. The trooper called for backup and followed the vehicle as it left Interstate 80 at the Darr interchange. Darr is between Lexington and Cozad.
The car traveled north to U.S. Highway 30 and then headed west. The second trooper tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver pulled the car to the side of the road then sped off.
A short pursuit followed, and about two miles west of Cozad the car had engine problems and pulled to the side of the road.
The driver, Jarrod Birch, 24, of Virginia Beach, Va., and passenger Alyssa Beard, 19, were taken into custody and were being held at the Dawson County Jail.
Birch was arrested on suspicion of felony flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of stolen property.
Beard, who was listed as a missing person from Petersburg, Va., was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property and carrying a concealed weapon.
