WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Nebraska picked up two Big Ten conference victories at the Boilermaker Softball Complex, defeating Purdue 5-2 and 12-2 in Saturday’s doubleheader.
The Huskers (34-9, 12-3 Big Ten) forced extra innings in the first game with a seventh-inning home run from Tatum Edwards that tied the game up at 2. Edwards’ timely solo shot to right centerfield was preceded by a 0-for-5 performance by the Huskers with runners in scoring position through the first six innings.
Courtney Breault provided the eventual game-winner in the top of the ninth inning, blasting a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left field. The shot also scored Mattie Fowler, who got on base with a single, and Edwards to give Nebraska a 5-2 lead.
Edwards completed her 21st win of the season, retiring the Boilermakers in order in the bottom of the ninth. The win was also the Huskers’ fourth in extra innings this season and marked the 12th road victory of 2013, which ties the second-highest total in school history.
With that dramatic victory behind them, No. 18 Nebraska finished the Saturday sweep with a double-digit win in game two.
The Huskers outhit Purdue 16-8 with Breault, Alicia Armstrong and catcher Taylor Edwards each picking up three. Armstrong pushed her hitting streak to 11 games and added her third home run of the season.
Freshman right-hander Emily Lockman picked up the win in the circle, improving to 13-3 on the year. Her counterpart, reigning Big Ten pitcher of the week Lilly Fecho, allowed nine runs in 6 innings.
The wins helped Nebraska remain in second place in the Big Ten standings. The Huskers and Boilermakers will wrap up their three-game series with a 10 a.m. start Sunday.
