In conditions better suited for flying kites, Grand Island's Steven Cahoy almost sailed higher than any pole vaulter in history.
Despite a cold cross-wind that played tricks on vaulters, the defending state gold medalist just nicked the bar with his chest on his first attempt at 16 feet, 8 inches.
That would have been an all-class state record for the Nebraska recruit at Papillion-La Vista South's Titan Invitational. Cahoy did clear 15-8 to top the meet record of 15-1 set by Jay Kilpatrick of Lincoln East in 2009.
Cahoy's best this season is 16-3 ½, which topped the Class A state record of 16-2 set by Brett Maher of Kearney in 2008. The all-class state record is 16-7 set in 2006 by Beatrice's Seth Burney.
Though he didn't go quite as high as he did last week, considering the conditions, Cahoy was happy with the way things turned out.
“I thought I had it (16-8) at first, but then I felt the bar graze my chest,” Cahoy said. “After that I just got worn out from all the jumps. I haven't had that many this season.”
Adverse weather has hampered teams through much of the first month of the season. Cahoy said what most affected his performance was how the wind made his pole wobble just before he was ready to plant and head into the air.
Cahoy set the only meet record at the eight-team event. The Papillion-La Vista boys scored 98 points to edge Grand Island (89), Omaha Burke (88) and Omaha Westside (82) for the team title, while Lincoln East topped the host Titans 122-103 to win the girls title.
Cahoy's younger brother Kevin finished second in the pole vault with a season-best 14-8. That ties him for second on the season leaders list with CJ Huber of York.
The lone double event winner in the boys competition was Andy Neal of Lincoln East, who took first in the 400-meter dash (51.58) and the 110 high hurdles (15.01).
There were two double gold medalists in the girls meet, and one of those — Keiteyana Parks of Lincoln High — prevented Papillion-La Vista South's Rachel Bramhall from winning three golds.
Parks won the 100 (12.64) and 400 (59.96) while Bramhall swept the hurdle races, winning the 100 highs in 15.62 and 300 lows in 46.82. Parks beat Bramhall in the 400 by 0.01 seconds. Bramhall's victory in the 300 hurdles was by 3.99 seconds.
