Right or wrong, the teaching profession often gets dinged for the excesses of members on its fringe. But a recent World-Herald article about University of Nebraska Medical Center anatomy professor emeritus Dr. Robert Binhammer was a reminder of teaching’s better angels. Here is a man who, after nearly six decades of training future doctors, decided in his 80s to forgo his salary so the university could hire new help and he could keep teaching. He wants to work; UNMC students want him around. That’s a retirement plan with dividends for all.
Pope Francis’s reputation for humility continues to grow. On his first day as pontiff, he stopped by his hotel to pick up his luggage and pay the bill himself. Then came word that the new pope called the owner of a Buenos Aires newspaper kiosk to say he no longer needed his morning paper delivered. According to news reports, the kiosk owner’s son, Daniel Del Regno, thought it was a joke until the caller told him, “Seriously, it’s Jorge Bergoglio, I’m calling you from Rome.”
