Omaha police have identified the man killed Saturday at an Omaha Housing Authority apartment complex in the old Peony Park area as Jer’ray Moore, 23.
The Omahan was found about 4 p.m. at the Cherry Tree Apartments, on the northwest corner of 83rd Street and Underwood Avenue, police said Sunday.
The Cherry Tree complex is made up of two 16-unit buildings.
Officers were called to 8316 Underwood Ave., Apartment 113, after a report of a shooting, said Officer James Shade, a police spokesman. Moore was taken to Creighton University Medical Center, where he died.
Roda Elman, whose apartment is in the same building as Moore’s, said she saw rescue squad personnel attending to Moore on a stretcher. She also said she heard a woman crying inside Moore’s apartment.
“She seemed so sad,’’ Elman said. “She was wimpering like her boyfriend had a heart attack or something.’’
Another Cherry Tree resident, Pam Lively, 54, said Moore and a female companion were good neighbors.
“As far as I know, they were real nice people,’’ she said. “I’ve borrowed salt and sugar from them.’’
No one was in custody in connection with the killing, Shade said, and the investigation was continuing.
It was the ninth death in Douglas County this year that law enforcement authorities have publicly said was a homicide.
Shade urged anyone with information on the killing to call the homicide unit at 402-444-5652 or, to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 402-444-7867.
Earlier reports incorrectly indicated that the shooting occurred across the street to the south, at Apple Valley Apartments.
