Side ponytails, shoulder pads and neon spandex will be out in full force next month. The Totally Rad 80s 5K is April 7.
“We won't dump color on you, or make you crawl through mud,” the race's website reads, “but you can stop and have a dance party to our 80s music playing along the course.”
More than 1,200 people are registered, making it one of the most popular local races in the state. Werner Park in Papillion will host the event.
Jacque Young, 30, created the race. A visit to Arizona, which was hosting a similar run at the time, inspired the theme.
“Everyone goes crazy about 80s stuff,” she said.
Runners will receive a T-shirt, sunglasses and access to the after-party, complete with 80s music, food and beer for purchase. The 5K is also chip-timed for serious runners, but Young said the race is about having fun.
Sign up online for $39. You can also register in person at the Red Dirt Running Company, near South 180th Street and West Center Road in Omaha. The price jumps to $44 April 1. You can sign up the day of the event. A portion of the proceeds will benefit local sports teams.
