EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Creighton split a doubleheader with Evansville on Saturday, earning a series win to open Missouri Valley Conference play.
Creighton (12-5, 2-1) lost the opener Saturday 4-1 before defeating the Purple Aces 6-2 in the series finale.
In the nightcap, Creighton jumped on the Purple Aces in the top of the first. Junior Brad McKewon led off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Jake Peter.
After Evansville knotted the game with a run in the second, Reagan Fowler delivered a two-run double — Creighton’s first extra-base hit of the series — to score Peter and junior Mike Gerber.
Creighton got one more run in the fifth on three two-out singles, then tacked on two insurance runs in the ninth.
Gerber and Fowler each had two hits to lead Creighton, with Fowler and Brennan Murphy driving in two runs apiece.
Matt Warren, Mark Winkelman and Bryan Sova pitched 623 innings of scoreless relief for Creighton, with Warren (1-0) earning the win. Cole Isom (1-4) took the loss for the Purple Aces.
Evansville (9-14, 1-2) used a strong pitching performance from Kyle Lloyd to win Saturday’s opener. Lloyd (3-2) held the Jays to one run on five hits in seven innings, surrendering only an RBI single in the sixth to Fowler, a freshman from Millard South. Evansville closer Jake Naumann picked up his fifth save of the season.
Peter and Fowler led the Jays’ offense with two hits. Senior Nick Musec (0-3) allowed three runs in 523 innings to take the loss.
Creighton returns to action at 6:05 p.m. Wednesday at Iowa.
