Jays fans are already wondering how to get Fox Sports 1 on their TVs.
When Creighton University moves to the Big East this year, many Creighton basketball games will be broadcast on the new 24/7 sports cable channel.
The channel will be launched Aug. 17 and will replace the Speed Channel, another Fox property. Fox Sports 1 will have rights to all Big East conference-controlled men's basketball games as well as select rights to women's basketball games. Jays fans should expect to watch a lot of games on Fox Sports 1, though not every Creighton game will be broadcast there.
The Speed Channel, currently Channel 78 on Cox, will go away when Fox Sports 1 is launched, and customers who currently have Speed will have Fox Sports 1.
“We'll have the channel,” said Cox Communications spokeswoman Gail Graeve. “With Creighton joining the Big East conference, our customers are very excited for the opportunity to view televised conference events.”
Customers must have a digital cable package and digital cable box to watch Speed, and that won't change when it becomes Fox Sports 1. The channel is expected to be carried on the two major satellite providers, just as Speed is now.
In addition to broadcasting college basketball, Fox Sports 1 expects to carry college football, NASCAR, soccer and the UFC. In 2014, the channel will bring Major League Baseball games.
A 12-year TV contract with Fox reportedly will pay Big East schools at least $3 million per year. — Kevin Coffey
