Four Husker pairs advance in tournament

Chula Vista, Calif. — The Nebraska sand volleyball team opened bracket play at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge with four teams advancing in the pairs tournament.

In the gold bracket, Nebraska’s Kelsey Robinson and Alexa Strange, who had a first round bye, took down Kristen Johannsen and Mackenzie Phelps of Grand Canyon 21-14, 21-9 to advance to the third round.

Meghan Haggerty and Sheridan Zarda opened play in the silver bracket for the Huskers by beating CSU Bakersfield’s Julia Bowen and Danika Youngblood 21-17, 21-15.

Morgan Broekhuis and Kadie Rolfzen then took down Kelsee Sawyer and Star Tucker from CSU Bakersfield 21-11, 21-12. Kelsey Fien and Alicia Ostrander complete the silver bracket sweep for Nebraska by winning their match against Lisa Bartsch and Molly O’Hagan 21-11, 22-20.

Nebraska’s Hayley Thramer and Amber Rolfzen lost their opening match in the gold bracket 15-21, 21-16, 14-16 to Shayna Guitare and Mariah Alvidrez of CSU Bakersfield, then bounced back in the first round of the gold consolation bracket to beat Debora Araujo and Yuan Fu of CSU Bakersfield 21-12, 21-14.

The Huskers continue pairs competition Saturday at noon, when Robinson and Strange face Pepperdine’s Kim Hill and Lilla Frederick in the gold winners bracket.

Silver bracket winners play continues at 1 p.m., with Haggerty and Zarda facing Pepperdine’s Kellie Woolever and Kelley Larsen, Broekhuis and Rolfzen playing Florida State’s Kristina Pellitteri and Stephanie Pelliteri and Fien and Ostrander taking on Pepperdine’s Victoria Adelhelm and Jazmine Orozco.
