The Kneifl boys got a big blue surprise this week.
Their dad, Scott, is the volleyball coach at Wayne State. He was visiting with Creighton coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth when the family got an opportunity to meet the CU basketball team.
“They are big Bluejay fans,'' Kneifl said. “They like those guys.''
CU Coach Greg McDermott used to coach at Wayne State, so the whole town is following his success at Creighton. Kneifl met the coach when he was a student at Wayne, and they have several mutual friends in the coaching fraternity.
“Coach Mac is a legend here in Wayne,'' Kneifl said. “He's done incredible things with the Creighton program and everybody is supporting and watching and rooting him on.''
The boys — Jacob, 10; Brooks, 8; and Jaxson, 4 —met the players, got their pictures taken with a few of them and shot a basket or two.
Their dad is a huge baseball fan, especially the New York Yankees. Brooks is named after Oriole great Brooks Robinson and Jaxson after Yankee star Reggie Jackson. Mom Jennifer got to name Jacob.
Kneifl said Creighton memorabilia is starting to take over the Yankee and Husker stuff in his sons' rooms.
He thought it was wonderful the Bluejays spent a few minutes with his kids, who the next day wanted to go back and repeat the experience.
“They talked about it the whole way home,'' Kneifl said.
