WI schools place 17 on boys all-state teams

Seventeen boys basketball players from The World-Herald’s western Iowa coverage area have earned all-state recognition from the Iowa Newspaper Association, including seven first-team honorees.

The INA’s statewide panel of sportswriters again selected three eight-member all-state teams in each of Iowa’s four classes. First-team selections include: Sioux City North sophomore Daniel Tillo in Class 4-A; Sioux City Heelan senior Shane Graves in 3-A; Tri-Center senior Britton Barrier, IKM-Manning senior TJ Sterk, Carroll Kuemper junior Sam Brincks and Nodaway Valley senior Alex Welsch in 2-A; and Riverside senior Ricky Williams in 1-A.

Graves, Sterk and Williams are repeat first-team selections. Welsch moved up from last year’s second team in 1-A, while Barrier was a third-team pick in 2-A last year.

Named to their respective second teams are Sioux City East’s Marcel Dunson in 4-A, Harlan Community’s Trey Lansman and Atlantic’s Dalton Franken in 3-A, and Nodaway Valley’s Brad Baudler in 2-A.

Six more picked up third-team all-state recognition: Sioux City Heelan’s Kyle Heaton, Atlantic’s Sam Markham, Harlan’s Nate Cave and Creston’s Luke Neitzel in 3-A; Carroll Kuemper’s Cole Neary in 2-A; and West Monona’s Josh Westendorf in 1-A.

The INA also named West Des Moines Valley senior Peter Jok Iowa’s Mr. Basketball for the 2012-13 season. An Iowa recruit, the 6-6 Jok averaged 23.6 points and 6.4 rebounds, while shooting 42 percent from 3-point range (58 of 138) and 92.6 percent from the free-throw line (126 of 136).
